How close to a building should a standby generator be installed?
According to NFPA 37, engines shall be situated so that they are readily accessible for maintenance, repair, and fire fighting.
Engines and weatherproof housings that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from any openings in the walls of structures. A clearance of less than 1.5 m (5 ft) shall be permitted where all portions of structures that are closer than 1.5 m (5 ft) from the engine enclosure have a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour.
As a recommendation, Clifford Power suggests installing generators at least 5 feet from building structures. This distance complies with NFPA standards while also providing adequate access for generator maintenance and repairs.
