Fuel Maintenance

Diesel fuel has a limited shelf life and left untreated could be rendered useless after two years.  Condensation while a natural occurrence, is diesel fuel’s worse enemy when fighting microorganisms.  The middle of a power failure is not the time to find out that your fuel is not up to par.  Proper diesel fuel maintenance treatments must be followed to ensure problems do not reoccur.

Clifford Power Systems recommeds our 4-Step Fuel Maintenance Program:

Step 1 – Fuel Treating – We add additives to the system during our regular maintenance visits that stabilize and protect your fuel.

Step 2 – Fuel Top Off – Because of the difficulties encountered by water in the fuel system, we recommend keeping the tank as full as possible at all times.

Step 3 – Fuel Testing (Fuel Sampling) – We offer fuel tests to monitor the state of the fuel. It’s important to do so because Testing the fuel is the only method to identify a problem before it keeps your generator from running. Fuel issues do not typically show up until the equipment is required to run under load during a power outage. The NFPA standard states an ASTM fuel quality test should be performed each year. We offer two levels.

  • “Quality and Contamination Test” checks for contaminants as well as the quality of the fuel. This test complies with the ASTM standards.
  • “Contamination Test” only checks for contaminants.

Step 4 – Fuel Filtering (Fuel Polishing) – This service is typically provided annually and only if the customer has had issues with the fuel source or if they have a very critical system. Additionally this treatment is also offered after a failed Fuel Test.
